This movie was one of Walt Disney best.
The character voices are one of the best and
especially the music it is the best music for the movie. The music was totally based on the action of the movie and the events.
On my opinion if the Walt Disney people made a second part we would love it.

Although I have read the true story of Mulan in Mandarin, I must say with deepest respect to the Chinese poem, the Disney version is certainly more entertaining.

I have been collecting DVD's for about 5 years now, and recently I came to the realization that I should start watching them. I stumbled through my Disney collection, and lo, a pretty face on the cover had aroused my curiosity.

As I carefully unwrapped the plastic from its binds, I stared into the drawn eyes of the illustration on the cover.

I must say that it had crossed my mind that this would be another Disney skin flick such as "The Little Mermaid" or even to an extent "Alladin" (it wouldn't had bothered me in the least had it been so!)

So on with inserting the DVD disc into my 'Go-Video DVP853' DVD player. Afterwards I had to make a choice, oddly enough, most movies I've seen usually required one-way input, but to my shock and awe, this had required that in order for me to receive from this DVD, I would have to first give it input as to what I had desired. I had actually desired a nice serving of 'Crackling Chicken' from New York City's "La Chinita Linda", but my choices were limited to "Full Screen" and "Wide Screen". I decided that based on the Mulan's slightly jadish facial feature, I felt that the most prudent choice would be Full Screen, to avoid her facial appearance to seem somewhat reverse triangular. I had also considered the possibility that this could be another 'skin flick' so I hypothesized the most logical choice would be "Full Screen". On with the show.

The music was very soothing in the beginning. I was sleepy from all this thinking. I had a wonderful sleep that night from what I can recall. Next time I watch it, I will certainly be sure to indulge myself to the acceptable controlled substance some refer to as 'ganja'.

Good job Disney. No, GREAT JOB. Walt, wherever you are, Heaven or Hell, you would be proud on those wonderful people who capitalized on your empire.

I saw 'Mulan' when I was eight years old and it remains my favourite even today, with 'Lilo and Stitch' and 'The Emperor's New Groove' coming in second and third. As you can see I'm a massive fan of Disney's more unconventional films. I don't like the usual formula- supermodel-looking girl meets airheaded love interest (albeit good-looking), they fall in love, he saves her, roll credits.

How can I say the ways I loved this film? Let me count the ways. I watched it today with my little sister (having not seen it in a few years) and I can honestly say it was like I was seeing it at the cinema all over again.

NUMBER ONE: The Kick-Ass Heroine
Mulan rocked in so many different ways. She was spontaneous, clever, driven and so funny without even trying to be... I liked her looks a lot- not going with a supermodel figure was a smart move. She would never have passed herself off as a man that way. Plus she had a cute face. If her eyes were too slanted or her skin colour exaggerated I, at least, didn't care. I know I'm going to get hunted down and destroyed for this, but I thought her features were just... cute.

NUMBER TWO: The Equally Kick-Ass Love Interest
For me, Shang had a lot of depth. The scene where he learns his father has died just about broke my heart. Also, his none-too-well-disguised effect on our heroine was the cause of some of the funniest none-dialogue bits- Mulan checking out Shirtless!Shang, Mulan reduced to a lovesick teenager after sincerely telling him that she thinks he's a great captain and on the flip side, Shang's little Noise as Mulan walks away. Every time we've watched it my older sister and I begin catcalling, "Wait for it, wait for it!" as he awkwardly compliments Mulan on (heh) 'fighting good'. Then he does the crushed Noise and we collapse in laughter. His military persona was nicely complimented by his very un-military gushing to Captain Li, coming on all tongue-tied at the sight of Mulan in women's clothes in her home and his enthusiastic, "Captain Li Shang, leader of China's finest troops. No, no, the greatest troops of all time! Heh, heh."

NUMBER THREE: The Voice Acting
Anyone seen 'Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within' (another of my favourite films)? Ming-Na Wen is fabulous as Aki Ross, and she's incredible as Fa Mulan. Everyone else did a mighty good job too, especially Eddie Murphy and BD Wong.

NUMBER FOUR: The Ancestors
Mweh-heh. I'm sorry, but the ancestors just cracked me up. "MY children never caused such trouble, THEY all became acupuncturists!" "Well, we can't ALL be acupuncturists!" Hee.

NUMBER FIVE: The Animation
I really loved the way everything looked. The Fa family's garden, for instance, and the mountains. I swear, some stills from certain scenes could be art pieces.

NUMBER SIX: The Songs
I always enjoy the music from the sequence where Mulan cuts off her hair and puts on her male disguise. Watching the movie at a friend's house I'd always beg to fast-forward to that part just to listen to the music. 'Be True To Your Heart' is almost criminally fun, and the song Shang sings (with occasional commentary from his recruits) is cool fun.

It's late at night and I can't think of anything else. But I would like to add a comment for negative reviewers. I found many of those reviews to be somewhat offensive. The few I found reasonable and understandable were those from people objecting to things such as the changes made from the myth to movie, or about the way the Chinese people were drawn, etc- but then only from people who actually made a POINT. I completely understand that one is always allowed an opinion. However, something that both puzzles and greatly annoys me is people who go on sites for things with loyal ban bases and diss what everyone else loves for no reason. You'll call me the wettest of wet blankets, but I can't see the fun in that. But I always treasure those who make an intelligent point, whether it echoes mine or not, and to me (ahem), "DIS MOVEE IZ GAY AND SUX." doesn't say a lot.

Now that I've given most of the other reviewers the ammo for a real shootin'-down of yours truly *SMIRK*, I'd like to summarise- a wonderful film that I firmly believe is among the best of cartoons. Classic!

I absolutely LOVE Mulan. Even though there are a ton of screw-ups.
Example: Little brother was a younger brother, not a dog. They have her name spelt wrong (but I guess they just didn't want to confuse people). I was Japanese-ish in parts. So yes, they royally messed up the true story of Mulan. Although they seem to love to royally mess up the stories of all their movies, I guess in a way to make it safe for children to watch (although I don't think a movie about war should be reated "G"). And I guess they had different drawers (because if you watch the movie her looks change a lot) and they weren't all drawing the same and some probably thought Japanese (Charlie Brown's Christmas tree is drawn different if you watch that movie, and it's because there were a few different people drawing it because they were in a rush to finish). If I think right, I think the Japanese were Chinese people that went to Japan to get away from something, I don't remember fully. They might have been wanting to finish the movie quickly (deadlines maybe?) and couldn't look everything up so it ended up being wrong. You do have to give them the benefit of the doubt though, for they always mess up stories. "The sword in the stone" was a real guy, but he was a general or something (I forget my schooling from last year kind of. lol), but the story of this guy got fancied. Then people wrote books (and the story of him isn't real now), of this boy who was supposed to be king and all with something to do with a sword. Well, anyway, if you were to learn the real story of the sword in the stone you would find out that it's really messed up and a ton of people die. Watch the movie "merlin" I think that's the closest to the real story. You find out that Camelot falls and Lancelot isn't a true knight, it's just really messed up. So anyway, back to Mulan. Even though it trully isn't 100% the real story, does give you some idea of the story and it shows people stories from Asia. And it's a funny movie in a way, even though it's insulting to Chinese people sometimes. I think that's why it's good. Also, Pocohantas, not like the disney movie at all. That movie is about 5% true. But I like the movie still, only because it does open people's eyes to history, and if they want to learn more to learn the true story then they'll research about it. So in a way it can be a good thing.

Mulan in some instances looked like a Japanese. What happened? Over all still a good movie. I expected more from Disney though.

Where is the chinese audio on the DVD. There are chinese audio versions around so why didn't Disney incorporate that audio in to the DVD release. The chinese audio even had Jake Chan in it. Of all things not have on a DVD this release.
Great music by Jerry Goldsmith. The Promo copy of Mulan Music is so much better than the one that was released to the public.

If The DVD had the chinese audio Mulan would have got a 10

Mulan is sooooo cool! It will always be one of my favorites. It's a show stopper, allright! Never have I seen so many positive reviews! It's encouraging, just like the movie itself. Some people say that it's stereotypical, but it's very politically correct compared to other things I've seen and heard. I think it will introduce young kids to Asisn culture in a realatively serious way and will teach them about a story that's popular in another country. I also hope they will want to learn more about other cultures. Li Shang is the finest man EVER animated! 2 cool! By all means, READ THE POEM!!!!! And I hope you people at Disney read these reviews and take a hint: MAKE A SEQUEL, PLEASE! And make it a ROMANTIC one!!!!
